Those most commonly affected were family members (including spouses/partners, other relatives, siblings, former spouse/partners), friends, and work colleagues. The most common harms experienced due to another person’s gambling were feeling angry, distressed or hopeless about their gambling, and experiencing greater tension and conflict in their relationships.

This interactive data visualisation shows changes in gambling participation among young people aged years and then two years later at years (for the same sample). Any gambling in the past 12 months increased significantly from age (15.8%) to age (45.7%). At age (18 is the legal age to gamble in Australia), 30.4% spent money gambling on poker machines, 15.3% scratchies, 12.7% casino table games, 11.8% racing, and 11.5% sports. Adolescents who played “gamblified” games were at greater risk of developing gambling or video-gaming problems, the inquiry found. Three in 4 (73%) Australians aged 18 and over reported spending money on one or more gambling products in the past 12 months (Figure 1). Lotteries/scratchies were the product with the highest participation (64%), followed by race betting (horse, greyhound and/or harness racing, 39%), sports betting (34%) and poker machines/‘pokies’ (33%) (see glossary).

Online betting sites using Cocos Islands web addresses investigated over possible breach
“It is an exciting time for the online casino market, and we’re proud to be able to tap into this momentum and introduce our proprietary product in West Virginia,” said Manjit Gombra Singh, PointsBet President of Product and Technology. By February 2022, PointsBet intends to have 30 online casino games available to West Virginia residents while it continues to develop the iGaming platform which has more than 120 casino games available in New Jersey and 100 in Michigan. To answer some of these questions and help inform treatments and policy reforms on behalf of those experiencing harm or who need help, we are seeking to recruit as many Australians as possible who have gambled or bet at least once in the past 12 months. The research consists of a brief online survey and we will follow-up up every three months to track the ongoing changes in levels of gambling over time. To find out if this is good news for people with problem gambling behaviours or a warning sign for a spike in gambling related problems to come, we have launched a national survey on betting behaviour during and following COVID-19 venue shut-downs. The online survey is open to anyone who has placed a bet or gambled in the past, and will track activity in the coming months.
Reduction of available spending money or savings, loss of sleep and less enjoyment from time spent with people they care about were also commonly reported. In 2019–20, per capita gambling expenditure/losses in Australia were estimated at around $1,068, down from $1,324 in 2018–19 (Figure 5). Over time, per capita expenditure on poker machines has been declining (although it still accounts for the most losses), while per capita expenditure on wagering (races, sports, other events) has been increasing. With the launch, West Virginia joins the states of Michigan and New Jersey where PointsBet offers its iGaming platform where users can gamble with real money to play popular casino games like Blackjack, Roulette, Baccarat and more. In addition to the game players can also earn real money through casino gaming online through various bonuses. It is usually in exchange for deposit or as a means of encouraging new players to join the casino.
